iPad 2 Not Showing in iTunes After 11.02.26 update

iPad and iTunes Fix

I just had one hell of a time trying to figure out why my iPad2 stopped showing up in iTunes after upgrading iTunes to the latest version (11.02.26).  I tried updating the iPad software and rebooting both the computer and the iPad. I tried uninstalling iTunes and rebooting both the computer and iPad. I tried all of the steps located here: http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/assistant/itunes/

What finally worked for me was to stop and start the Apple Mobile Device service as described below:

Windows XP

  1. Close iTunes and disconnect the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. Choose Start > Control Panel.
  3. Inside the Control Panel, open Administrative Tools.
  4. Open Services.
  5. Select Apple Mobile Device and click Stop the service
  6. After the service has stopped, click Start the service.
  7. After the Apple Mobile Device service has started again, open iTunes and connect the device.

Windows Vista or Windows 7

  1. Close iTunes and disconnect the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
  2. Click the Windows Start button.
  3. In the Start Search field type Services.
  4. In the Programs section of the search results, Click “Services”.
  5. Select Apple Mobile Device and click Stop the service as shown below:
  6. After the service has stopped, click Start the service.
  7. After the Apple Mobile Device service has started again, open iTunes and connect the device.

Recently, I was running into an issue with my iPad where a lot of space was being taken up by files categorized as ‘Other’ in iTunes. On a 16GB iPad I would often find that up to 8GB of space was used up in this ‘Other’ category. Which was ridiculous. I ran across several possible [...]
